Paul Paviour - Compositions

The compositions of Paul Paviour cover all areas of creativity. The orchestral works include symphonic output, several overtures including the popular 'Streetscape at Noon' and the 'Symphonic retrospective 1940'. There are also concertos for Horn, Oboe and Piano.

Lighter works include the 'Nine Nostalgic Nonentities' and the 'Songs for the Cocktail Hour'.

Stage works include the musical 'Sauce for the Gander' which had an acclaimed run in Canberra in 1984, and the ballad opera 'Caroline'.

As a person who has taught in academic establishments in two continents for over forty years, there is a large corpus of work for educational use. These include 'Congo Jive' (Boosey and Hawkes), 'Old Friends', 'New Portraits', 'All Systems Go', 'Yesterday, A Man Died', 'To whom it may concern', 'Karingal Suite' and 'The Pyramid Rave'.

Concert Band and Brass Band music figures large in his oevre. The suites 'Beyond the Black Stump', 'Blow-by-Blow', and 'Rosemary in April' are worth considering for any concert programming.

But the thread running through his list of works is that of choral and vocal works. As one of the senior church musicians in Australia, a fair proportion of this work is for ecclesiastical use, often written for national occasions such as the 'Festival Te Deum' for the Consecration of Bathurst Cathedral, 'Luse Aeterna' for the 1977 General Synod of the Anglican Church, and the 'Canberra Canticle' written for Her Majesty the Queen's visit to St Paul's Canberra in 2000.

A complete list of compositions available, both published and in manuscript, can be obtained from the Australian Music Centre in Sydney Australia.
